The 2018 Kansas Endless Foot Drag Begins in Fredonia

Updated:
FREDONIA, KANSAS -

"The namesake is the 'Endless Foot Drag' and so you're going to see a lot of pilots flying along the grass, with their toes dragging in the grass, having a really good time," said paragliding instructor Matt Holliday.

Shawn Witt loves paragliding so much, he made it his full time job.

"Well for me, it's just pure relaxation. It's just pure enjoyment. It's just bliss. I don't know if there's any other word I can use to describe it," said Witt.

The 2018 Kansas Endless Foot Drag brings more than 200 parapilots and vendors to Fredonia, Kansas this week, and Witt fits into both those categories.

"Being a professional pilot as I am, it's just another form of flight. It's kind of like having an ATV in the sky. You can just go anywhere," said Witt.

The thrill of taking to the skies is alluring to many, and the experts say it's safer than one might think.

"It's considered the safest form of aviation there is. Of course with anything in aviation, there is an inherent risk, as with anything else with flying. But because of it's relatively slow rate of flight and slow rate of climb, and overall safety of the gear that you learn on, it's as safe as you want it to be," said Holliday.

And Witt says a fear of heights can be overcome for those who are interested.

"We do talk to a lot of people that may be afraid of heights, but it's kind of surprising where that gets subdued, and you're in the chair flying and it's a very subtle, docile way to fly," said Witt.
