The Kansas Office of the Attorney General says 37-year-old Dejay Lynn Schlegel pleaded guilty today in Wilson County District Court to several charges including murder.

Schlegel was one of two people arrested in the death of 57-year-old Michael P. Elam, who was found dead inside his home after it burned down on December 13th, 2016.

According to court documents, two suspects broke into his home at 509 Wisconsin in Neodesha, KS. In April of 2017, authorities arrested Schlegel and his girlfriend, 25-year-old Hayley Hurst, in connection to the case.

Today, May 22nd, 2018, Schlegel pleaded guilty to reckless second degree murder, one count of arson, one count of interference with law enforcement and one count of theft. Judge David W. Rogers accepted the pleas and scheduled sentencing for August 8th at 1:30 p.m.

Hurst has previously pleaded not guilty to second degree murder (unintentional but reckless) and theft. She is scheduled to be in court for a hearing on August 8th at 3:30 p.m.

The case was investigated by the Neodesha Police Department and Kansas Bureau of Investigation. Assistant Attorney General Jessica Domme of Schmidt's office is prosecuting the case.
