Girard Softball Stays Undefeated, Advances to State Semifinals

The Girard Trojans are moving on to the state semifinals.

The 2nd-seeded Trojans beat Smoky Valley HS 6-1 in the first round on Thursday night. Girard is now 23-0 overall this season and will face the winner of Baldwin/Burlington in the 4A-DII semifinals Friday morning. Click HERE to check out the complete 4A-DII state bracket. 

Shelby Smith pitched a complete game for Girard Thursday night, picking up eight strikeouts along the way. Marci Heatherly was 2-2 with a double and a pair of RBI's. Shaylun Grosstephan also drove in two runs.

    Two cycling events both follow Route 66. As the Oklahoma Freewheel comes to a close, the Big Bam Ride begins in Joplin.  After riding 425 miles across Oklahoma and Kansas, roughly five hundred cyclists will be departing on a five-day cycling tour  along historic route 66  for the Big Bam ride.

    GOP Candidates for governor in Kansas took part in a debate and forum in Parsons Saturday night. During the event a straw poll was conducted. Kansas Secretary of State Kris Kobach was a clear leader with 51% of the straw poll votes.
