Missouri Residents to Vote on Gas Tax Increase

Updated:
JOPLIN, MISSOURI -

Jennifer Johnson owns CheeZies Pizza in Joplin, and likely won't be voting for the gas tax increase.
"We're probably going to have to raise our delivery rates. And our deliveries may suffer because of that"
If passed, gasoline tax would go up two and a half cents a year for four years, totaling an increase of 10 cents per gallon. So by 2022, you'd be paying 27 cents of tax per gallon.
Representative Bill White says Missouri has the seventh greatest amount of paved roads in the nation and has had major expansions over the past 20 years, and it's time to take care of them.
"Agricultural produce trucks, when they're harvesting their crops, they can't fill all the way to the legal load limits that they can. Because they can't cross any of the bridges in rural areas, because they aren't able to hold the weight anymore"
But the concern for Johnson doesn't stop at the gasoline.
"Our products will probably go up because there's also a proposed 12 cent tax hike for diesel, and that always comes right back to us a small business owners"
"Most people appreciate our roads compared to some of our other states around here. When you drive on their roads, you fell like you need to get an alignment after their done. We don't want Missouri to become that way" says White.
Thanks to the Hancock Amendment which prevents tax increases this high without being voted in by the people, it's up to Missouri voters whether or not you'll be paying more taxes at the pump.
