Pitt State Wraps Up NCAA DII Outdoor Track and Field Championships

RELEASE FROM PITTSBURG STATE ATHLETICS:

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The Pittsburg State University men finished eighth and the women 13th at the 2018 NCAA Division II Outdoor Track & Field Championships Saturday (May 26).

The Pitt State men compiled 31.5 points in the three-day meet. Texas A&M University-Kingsville captured the national championship with 65 points, while Ashland University (51), Tiffin University (50), St. Augustine's University (42) and Grand Valley State University (39) rounded out the top five spots.

The Pitt State women finished with 15.75 points. Lincoln University claimed the national title with 60 points, followed by St. Augustine's (48.5), Angelo State University (42.5), Grand Valley State (40.5) and Adams State College (39).

Junior NaRon Rollins led the Pitt State men Saturday, finishing as the national runner-up in the 100 meters (10.22) and finished third in the 200 meters (20.59). Junior Justice Burks also claimed All-America honors by racing to a third-place finish in the 110 meter hurdles (13.89).

Junior Kai Miller also garnered All-America honors with a fifth-place tie (16-8). Sophomore Creighton Sanders also claimed All-America honors with an eighth-place finish in the javelin (212-1) and senior Omar Lewis received All-America honors with an eighth-place finish in the shot put (58-1.75).

Senior Jasmine Smith sparked the Pitt State women with her third-place finish in the shot put (52-9.5). Junior Jena Black also received All-America honors with an eighth-place finish in the discipline (49-11).

Senior Kelsey Lewis closed out the Gorillas action Saturday with a sixth-place All-America showing in the 200 meters (24.00).

    After reviewing the Kansas Highway Patrol's investigation, the Cherokee County Kansas Attorney will not file charges against the driver of the van. On May 8th, 2018, two cyclists from Germany were riding on Highway 66 near mile marker 1.8 when they were hit by a 2013 Chrysler Town and Country van. The cyclists, 71-year-old Heinz Gerd Buchel and 74-year-old Harry Jung, died at the scene. The highway patrol report states that the van was traveling west in the right lane of K-66 wh...
