The Nature Discovery Course for Teachers - August 1

Updated:

Diamond, MO - The staff of George Washington Carver National Monument announces a nature discovery workshop for teachers, set for Wednesday, August 1st, 2018. Presented in partnership with the Missouri Department of Conservation, The Nature Discovery at G. W. Carver National Monument Educators Course will be held at George Washington Carver National Monument from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Teachers will investigate the unique habitats and life forms of George Washington Carver's birthplace and childhood home, using the Missouri Department of Conservation Discover Nature Schools curriculum. This educator course will examine how the area is connected through its watershed, landforms and food-web. Participants will look at the area through today's lens and what George W. Carver would have witnessed in his childhood.

Subjects will include the cultural history of the park, animal and plant adaptations, science note-booking, and habitats. Missouri State Learning Standards and Next Generation Science Standards crosswalks will be available for K – 4 grade teachers. All teacher materials for the class will be provided. Field trip opportunities to George Washington Carver National Monument and MO Department of Conservation grants will be covered. Teachers should bring a sack lunch and wear comfortable clothing for an outdoor experience.

This course is presented free of charge by the Missouri Department of Conservation and the National Park Service and is open to teachers, pre-service teachers, homeschool parents, and youth leaders. Space is limited and educators are encouraged to call 417-325-4151 to complete registration.

This "Find Your Park" event invites the public to see that a national park can be more than a place -- it can be a feeling, a state of mind, or a sense of American pride. Beyond vast landscapes, the campaign highlights historical, urban, and cultural parks, as well as the National Park Service programs that protect, preserve and share nature, culture, and history in communities nationwide.

Administered by the National Park Service, an agency of the Department of the Interior, George Washington Carver National Monument preserves the birthplace and childhood home of George Washington Carver, scientist, educator, and humanitarian. Please call the park at 417-325-4151 between 9 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. for further information. Visit our website at www.nps.gov/gwca and Facebook page. The park is located two miles west of Diamond, Missouri, on Highway V, then south ¼ mile on Carver Road. #GWCarver75th #FindYourPark

Tuition is still going up at Missouri Southern State University, but it's tweaking the cost increase to credit hours to avoid a state fine. Missouri Southern's Board of Governors approved a 15 percent increase in student tuition last April, upping credit hours by $30. But state education law doesn't allow tuition increases beyond the consumer price index. To avoid a $1.1 million fine, MSSU adjusted down the tuition increase to $20 more per credit.
