Three Gorillas Make Academic All-District List

RELEASE FROM PITTSBURG STATE ATHLETICS:

PITTSBURG — Three Pittsburg State University track & field athletes – Jena Black, Christina Metzger and Levi Wyrick – earned 2017-18 Google Cloud Academic All-District honors for cross country/track & field. All three athletes now are eligible for Google Cloud Academic All-America® honors.

Black, a junior from Halstead, Kan., has a 3.97 grade point average as a political science major. Black earned All-America honors in the shot put in both the indoor and outdoor track & field seasons. Metzger, a senior from Overland Park, Kan., has a perfect 4.00 GPA as a music major. Metzger garnered the NCAA Elite 90 Award for women's cross country after helping the Gorillas qualify for the 2017 NCAA Division II National Championships. Wyrick, a redshirt sophomore from Elk City, Kan., also has a perfect 4.00 GPA as a physical education major. Wyrick claimed the NCAA Elite 90 Award for men's outdoor track & field after qualifying for the national meet in the hammer throw.

The 2017-18 Google Cloud Academic All-America® teams for men's and women's outdoor track & field will be announced later this month.

    The Kansas Highway Patrol says one man is dead after a two-vehicle crash on U69 about two miles south of Pittsburg. It happened on August 20th, 2018 around 9:10 a.m. Authorities say 70-year-old Stephen Hite was driving a Ford Ranger south on U69. He was slowing to turn onto E. 510 Ave. and was rear-ended by a Chevy Malibu. Hite's truck overturned onto its roof. Both vehicles came to rest in the east ditch. Hite died at the scene.     The man accused of killing a Carl Junction, Missouri girl in 2017 appears in court today, August 20th, 2018. During the motions hearing, the judge set a trial date of April 15th, 2019. Jalen Vaden is accused of killing 3-year-old Jayda Kyle at the Carl Junction home he shared with the child's mother.     On August 18th, 2018 officers responded to the area of 2500 Stevens Avenue in Parsons for a shooting with reported multiple victims. The Parsons Police Department and Labette County Sheriff's Office investigated and found three victims: 21-year-old Deana Sumner, 18-year-old Skylar Sumner and 20-year-old Joshua Sharp.
