Annual Fundraiser Draws Large Crowd - KOAM TV 7

Mercy Hospital Stick it to Diabetes

Mercy Hospital hosted a wellness and awareness fundraiser tonight in Joplin.

Hope City church in Joplin was the site of the 2018 stick it to diabetes event.

The Mercy Health Foundation Joplin and Mercy Diabetes and Nutrition Center hosted the fundraiser which included diabetes-friendly meals and music with the band Delta Rae.

The money raised will go to help those who cannot afford medication or supplies, and other innovative technologies related to diabetes.

Dr. Gretchen Shull, Mercy Hospital Endocrinologist: "There are staples of care that are becoming available now, such as insulin pumps and sensors. Those are very costly, especially if you don't have insurance. So, this year we have enough funds to were we actually are able to help support those people to at least get them started and kind of find ways to make them great self managers of their diabetes."

Jill Miller, Mercy Patient: "Being able to get my care there has just enabled me to life a long happy life. And I've been with doctor Shull for the past 10 years, and being with her I've just, I've been able to have a healthy pregnancy, have a baby, it's just enabled me to have a great life, and I feel truly blessed."

More than 350 people attended tonight's event - making it the largest year yet.

    Girard Kansas is the place for a unique summer camp this week. A camp where kids are getting the chance to learn everything there is to know about rodeo.  Bull fighting.. bareback horse riding.. and calf roping. Those are just a few things campers are learning at the 4th annual "Cross Trails Cowboy Ministry" rodeo bible camp.  One of those campers.. is Karson Harris.
