Pittsburg Bladesmith Featured on National TV

Updated:
PITTSBURG, KANSAS -

A local "blade smith" is competing in tonight's episode of the History Channel show "Forged in Fire."

The question is.. how will it impact him in the future? We sat down with a few former contestants to find out.

Alan Kirby has been a bladesmith for a little over two years - that's why he was surprised - and a little nervous - to learn he would be on the History Channel show "Forged in Fire."

Alan Kirby, Pittsburg Bladesmith:"I was a little nervous, a little intimidated just because I hadn't been forging long, so a lot of practice was in order."

Kirby was joined by friends and family tonight in Pittsburg to watch how he shaped up against seven other blade smiths.

Kirby:"The brotherhood that forms among blade smiths is pretty remarkable. We bonded at the show and it's been an amazing experience with them."

Kirby isn't the first bladesmith from the area to be featured on the show. Phil Evans from Columbus Kansas and Paul Brown of Carthage Missouri have both been a part of the competition.

Phil Evans, Columbus Bladesmith- Former Contestant:"I's really made a lot of difference in my business and the people that have supported me.. I couldn't be more excited about it. It was a great experience, and I look forward to doing it again someday."

Paul Brown, Carthage Baldesmith - Former Contestant:"There are a lot more people that call me or text me or write to me and say hey, i saw you on the show and liked the knife or liked the little knife and what would something like this.. can you make one of these? And so, I've got a big list of people waiting on blades right now."

Brown and Evans both think it's great more smiths from the midwest are being featured - and proud that Kirby is one of them.

Evans:"He is a super nice guy, I know he's got lots of artistic talent. He's fairly new to forging, and I think he's really doing a great job."

As they look back at their moments of fame - Kirby is living in the moment.. and preparing for what's to come in the future.

Kirby:"I'm definitely living in the moment tonight, but I've tried as hard as i can to prepare for the impact it'll have on a small business in a small town."
