School Bus Safety in Chanute

Updated:
CHANUTE, KANSAS -

Riding the school bus in Chanute, Kansas just got a lot safer for local kids, thanks to the Zonar card. That card is part of the Zonar Tracking System which keeps track of Chanute students every time they get on and off a school bus.

The new system has a lot of local fans, including Ralph Bayles who has two first graders at Chanute Elementary.

"Oh I think it's excellent. Anything we can do to keep our kids safe and sound," said Bayles.

The Zonar system uses GPS to track the school buses and Zonar cards to track the students who ride them. Every school bus riding student has already been issued a Zonar card, and student passengers are required to swipe when they get on or off. That information goes straight to a computer, which logs when and where a student got on or off a school bus.

"We haul morning sessions, and afternoon sessions, and during the day, and activity trips. We're hauling about 1800 or 1900 kids a day," said Charlie McKinney, the school district's Director of Support Operations

McKinney says school officials have seen Zonar succeed in other Kansas schools, and wanted the safety feature for their students. A scare at a neighboring school district also helped them make the decision.

"We had a school district close to us that had a wreck and they weren't able to account who was on that bus," said McKinney.
