Joplin Police: Thank you for all the tips, we have spoke to this driver today. After further investigation we are pleased to confirm the Jeep wasn't involved in the crash and actually rendered aid and was on scene when officers first arrived. Further review of surveillance and dash cam/body cam video confirmed he was a witness to the incidents but not involved and did no wrong doing. We understand that during such a chaotic event numerous witnesses can believe they saw something, and we appreciate everyone's help that was a witness and or rendered aid at the time of the crash. The investigation is still on-going.

UPDATE (Oct. 5, 2018): Joplin Police release names and more details on the deadly crash Thursday afternoon at 6th and Joplin Street. 

According to JPD a 2005 Buick driven by Annita Miller was driving eastbound on 6th at Joplin Avenue.  When Miller began to cross Joplin Ave., her vehicle was struck by a 2012 Ford Focus driven by Michael Kailer of Joplin, who was traveling at a high rate of speed southbound on Joplin Ave.. Two back passengers of the Buick were thrown from the car.  One passenger, Misty Pietrzak, 43 year old of Joplin died at the hospital from her injuries.  JPD says seven vehicles were damaged in the crash either directly involved or flying debris. 

Police were seeking a black Jeep Cherokee which left the scene. Authorities are not actively seeking that vehicle.  

The Joplin Police Department Major Crash Team is investigating this crash.  


(Oct. 4, 2018) Police search for a vehicle that fled the scene of a fatal crash.

On October 4th, 2018, the Joplin Police Department responded to a serious crash at 6th and Joplin Street at 4:43 p.m. Officers say there were numerous witnesses, vehicles and victims. Four people were taken to local hospitals. Police say two of those patients were transported in critical condition, one has since died from injuries.

The Major Crash Team remains on the scene as of 6:55 p.m. investigation and the roads remain closed in the area. No names or other details are being released at this time.

Police are asking for the public's help in finding a vehicle that fled the scene. The vehicle is described as a black Jeep Cherokee with front end damage driven by a male. Police want to identify and speak to the driver.

Authorities say one person has died at the hospital from injuries sustained in the crash.

Joplin Police confirm that there were four vehicles involved, including one that left the scene. Four people are injured. No word on the extent of those injuries.

Two people were taken to the hospital with critical injuries. Authorities have cut another individual out of one of the vehicles involved. At least two cars are involved.

Joplin Police say they're working a serious crash at 6th and Joplin with multiple injuries. Joplin Street from 5th to 7th and 6th Street from Main to Wall are closed. Avoid the area. We will have more details as they become available.
