New Jasper County Juvenile Center Taking Shape

Updated:
JOPLIN, MISSOURI -

The new Jasper County Juvenile Justice Center is starting to take shape.

Construction on the eight-point-six-million dollar facility located at 6th and Pearl.. is on schedule.

Then it's complete, the facility will have a secure area with eight holding cells and room to expand to sixteen.. a full kitchen area.. a medical exam room and a booking area.

It'll also include a non-secure wing with several classrooms.. an assessment area.. and a full courtroom.

A design that is meant to be more simple and constructive.

Dan Rowe, President of Trainer HL Architects: "Most of the time what you find in this type of a facility is that they are purpose driven around detention, or around the classroom, or around court. This actually takes the full line of services for kids who are at risk, though kids who are going through the process, and it serves all of them. So what we really focused on, is to try to make a trauma informed design. Trauma informed being that design that doesn't take a kid and make them worse off than when they entered the system."

Erik Theis, Jasper County Court Administrator: "The vast majority of people that come into the adult criminal system lack skills, and so we know that there's a direct link there, and so what we want to do is quickly identify any youth that could potentially be high risk, and then giving them the services they need and targeting those interventions."

The facility is expected to be complete by spring of next year.
