Frontenac Wants You

Dakota Prier works and goes to school in Frontenac, Kansas, and he's not sure he ever wants to leave, mainly because of the residents.

"They're extremely nice, a lot of great people here," said Prier.

And thanks to a new plan from the city, Dakota might be making some new friends. Frontenac is looking to grow its local economy and population, and is doing so with a money saving incentive. Starting October 15th, people who buy a home in Frontenac or start a new business in Frontenac will have their water and sewer bill covered for a year, if they agree to stay for at least the following year.

"Homeowners are people who are truly invested in the community, who care about the quality of life in the community, who participate in the community. And those are the people we'd like to relocate here in Frontenac," said Frontenac City Administrator Brad Reams.

Reams says the city believes it will recoup the money it loses by covering new water and sewer bills through the increase in property and other taxes, paid by new residents. And he says the move will ultimately benefit all Frontenac residents.

"This is going to enlarge our tax base. And for people who are already existing here who are not eligible for this abatement, that's going to assist them as well. So we tried to look at an incentive that will help everyone," said Reams.
